economic strata and are often residents of rural areas. Diet lacks high-class proteins and consists mostly of cereals and a small quantity of pulses. Very low levels of total serum proteins and albumin are noted in hospitalized patients. The presumptive evidence of protein malnutrition and deprivation is strong, unlike the cryptogenic types in Britain. Less than a quarter of patients give a history of jaundice. Presuming that all jaundice in the past is due to infectious hepatitis, the actual percentage may be much less, as pallor of anaemia due to ankylostomiasis is often wrongly described as icterus by these patients, as they are not good witnesses of their past events. Further, infectious hepatitis is more common in cities, but cirrhotics are mostly drawn from villages. It is therefore likely that viral hepatitis may be of even lesser importance in causation of cirrhosis in India than in England. A majority of patients, 55 to 75%, show a post-necrotic pattern of hepatic tissue.-I am, etc., B. L. AGARWAL.Moti Lall Nehru Medical College. Allahabad, India.

Nutrient Intake Values for Folate during Pregnancy and Lactation Vary Widely around the World
Folate is a B-vitamin with particular importance during reproduction due to its role in the synthesis and maintenance of DNA. Folate is well known for its role in preventing neural tube defects (NTDs) during the periconceptional period. There is also an increased need for folate throughout pregnancy to support optimal growth and development of the fetus and blood volume expansion and tissue gro...

متن کاملFolic acid: influence on the outcome of pregnancy.
The periconceptional use of folic acid-containing supplements reduces the first occurrence, as well as the recurrence, of neural tube defects. Women of populations in which adverse pregnancy outcomes are prevalent often consume diets that contain a low density of vitamins and minerals, including folate. Folate intake may need to be sustained after complete closure of the neural tube to decrease...
متن کاملNew standard for dietary folate intake in pregnant women.
The Institute of Medicine Panel for Folate and Other B Vitamins and Choline considered data from population-based and metabolic studies to revise the dietary intake standards for pregnancy. The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for pregnant women is the average daily dietary intake sufficient to meet the requirements of 97-98% of pregnant women. The RDA is derived from the amount estimated to...
متن کاملHas prenatal folate supplementation established an at-risk population for age-related cognitive decline?
Nutrition exerts a pervasive impact on normal and pathological conditions of the nervous system throughout life. Maternal folate supplementation during pregnancy has reduced developmental disorders of the nervous system, but may have also fostered an increase in individuals harboring genetic polymorphisms that compromise folate usage. Such individuals may harbor a lifetime requirement for addit...
متن کاملSecreted and placental membrane forms of folate-binding protein occur sequentially during pregnancy in swine.
The objective was to understand how two forms of folate-binding protein interact to accomplish folate transport during pregnancy in swine. Specific folate binding was measured in uterine flushings during the estrous cycle and early pregnancy and in allantoic fluid (secreted form) and placental membranes (membrane form) throughout later pregnancy. In addition, the localization of the secreted fo...
